During the month of August, people around the world celebrated World Breastfeeding Week, August 1-7th. As many of you know already, breastfeeding is the best source of infant nutrition. Numerous studies have shown that breastfeeding contributes to lower obesity of infants and reduces the risk of infection and disease (including respiratory and gastrointestinal disorders, ear infections, leukemia and SIDS). Breastfeeding also impacts the mothers health by reducing her risk of breast/ovarian cancer, diabetes and even heart disease. Besides the physical benefits of breastfeeding, the emotional benefits are equally as important. Skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth allows your baby to follow his instincts and find his way to the breast all by himself! The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for at least 6 months. Support for mom and family is vital to breastfeeding success. Seeking out education around breastfeeding during the prenatal period, can increase the chances that mom/baby will have a successful breastfeeding experience. Encourage mom to access breastfeeding support early if questions or problems should arise. Support can be found at Women's Health Institue, The Birthing Center, Labor and Delivery at Holy Cross Hospital, WIC Program, and First Steps. My hope is that our community can help create an environment that is supportive of mothers who choose to breastfeed. Cheers!
